MEXICO CLASSIC CUP FUTURITY(RG2) QUALIFIERS
Hobbs, NM - Oct. 15, 2011 - Call A Fast Corona, a homebred
Southern Corona gelding racing for Richard Shearer, won the first of
seven trials on Saturday and posted the fastest qualifying time for
the October 30 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.
Saddled by Trey Wood and ridden by Oscar Rincon, Call A Fast Corona
covered 400 yards in :19.113 and earned a 99 speed index. The
gelding was sent to post as the 7-5 favorite, and his margin of
victory was 1 ¾ lengths from ninth-fastest qualifier Gotta Get Two.
Call A Fast Corona's victory was his third in four starts and
increased his earnings to $12,410. He was making his first start
since July 15, when he won a Zia Futurity (RG2) trial at Ruidoso
Downs.
PK Bay won the seventh trial by 1 ½ lengths in :19.130 and recorded
the second-fastest qualifying time. The Brookstone Bay gelding is
campaigned by David Barrett and Sue H. May from the barn of Fred
Danley.
This year's New Mexico Cup Futurity will offer a purse of $322,283,
with $154,696 going to the connections of the winner.
