Longshot Sir
Seth Runs Big in Zia Park QH Championship
Hobbs, NM Dec. 4, 2011 - Rodney Christiansen's Sir Seth scored an
upset victory in Sunday's Grade 1, $150,000 Zia Park Quarter Horse
Championship Stakes.
Saddled by John Stinebaugh and ridden by Salvador Martinez, Sir Seth
led at every call en route to a neck victory over Celtic Classic.
The homebred 4-year-old stallion by all-time leading sire First Down
Dash returned a $61.40 win mutuel and paired with the runner-up, a
13-1 longshot, for a $667.60 ($2) exacta.
Sir Seth was bred in California. His sire, First Down Dash, was
American Quarter Horse racing's world champion in 1987. His progeny
earnings stand at more than $73.7 million, the highest of all time,
and his runners include 35 AQHA champions. First Down Dash died at
the age of 26 on November 25, 2010.
Sir Seth is also one of three starters produced by Quiet Courage, a
winning 9-year-old daughter of 1994 AQHA champion sophomore colt
Heza Fast Man. The colt's second dam, the Windy Ryon mare Windy
Sensation, won a futurity at Trinity Meadows in Texas in '96.
Racing in four different states, Sir Seth has won nine of 18 outs,
and the $89,100 winner's share of the Zia Park Championship purse
pushed his earnings to $271,422. His stakes record includes a
third-place finish in champion First Klas Fred's 2009 Ruidoso
Futurity (G1) and a third-place run in last year's Ruidoso Derby
(G1).
Double Chiseled, Jess A Runner, A Spring Snow, 4-5 favorite Noconi,
and Strike It Quick completed the order of finish.
Runner-up Celtic Classic was coming off of a third-place finish in
the November 6, $55,000 Lovington Stakes (G2) at Zia. The 5-year-old
gelding by Check Him Out, who races for Romualdo Tarango, has won
six of 32 starts and has banked $154,957, of which $116,916 has been
earned this season.
Double Chiseled is a 5-year-old SC Chiseled In Stone gelding owned
by Top Roustabouts and Backhoe Service. He has earned $246,164 from
23 races, and his six wins include the Lovington Stakes and the
350-yard, $55,360 James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia.
