Take Me Away Today sweeps to victory in $50,000
El Paso Times Stakes
Sunland Park, NM Jan. 22, 2012 - Take Me Away Today raced from last
to first to capture an impressive two and one-quarter length victory
in the 15th running of the $50,000 El Paso Times Stakes at Sunland
Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.
Patiently ridden by the meet’s leading jockey Miguel Hernandez, Take
Me Away Today responded with a bold closing effort in the six and
one-half furlong feature for three year old fillies. Hernandez
guided the Old Topper filly to a rail’s run on the far turn before
opening up with an encouraging 5-wide advance in upper stretch. Take
Me Away Today inhaled her opponents and was in charge passing the
sixteenth pole. The chestnut filly finished well clear of Brooks
Beach and was clocked in 1:18.64.
Johnnie Nall trained the 9-1 shot winner. Nall won last year’s El
Paso Times Stakes with Angel At Home. The 2012 winner paid $21.80 to
win.
Take Me Away Today recorded her second win from five starts and
earned $30,000 for the Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC of Santa Ynez,
California.
Brooks Beach finished a good second under jockey Alejandro Medellin.
The El Corredor filly found an opening along the rail in mid-stretch
but had no answers for the winner. The runner-up trained by Jose A.
Gonzalez finished three-parts of a length in front of Angry Bird.
Affable Amy, the 8-5 favorite, gave way in fifth place after making
a promising middle move.
Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:25 p.m.
