Coady Photography/Plum Pretty winner Sunland Park Oaks - 11th Running - Purse $200,000

2.9 Million Dollar Day at Sunland Park

Sunland Park, NM – March 27, 2011 - The Sunland Derby was one of six stakes contested on Sunland Park's 13-race program. A record $2,963,240 was wagered on the all-Thoroughbred card, of which $2,554,663 was bet off track.

Total wagering on the Sunland Derby (Gr. III) day was a state and track record of $2,963,240. A record crowd of 18,571 fans came to watch and wager on the 13-race card.  Total purses exceeded $1.5 million for the record setting day.

On the undercard, Plum Pretty was a 25-length winner for Bob Baffert in the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks at one and one-sixteenth miles. Martin Garcia was the winning pilot.  The winning margin is one of the largest in Sunland Park history. The 1-9 favorite completely dominated the Oaks at one and one-sixteenth miles. The Medaglia d’Oro filly was clocked in 1:43.18. She earned $120,000 for the Peachtree Stable of Wellington, Florida. Paloma Mesa and Formal Plan were a distant second and third, respectively. Paloma Mesa earned $44,000 for the Running Horse Farm LLC of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Sky Mesa filly s trained by Thomas Pierce, Jr.

Julien Leparoux guided Twelve Twenty Two to victory in the $100,000 Harry Henson Handicap for trainer Henry Dominguez. The exceptional daughter of Kafwain dominated American Story by over 5 lengths and caught the one mile distance in a fast 1:36.49. Local horsemen J. Kirk Robison and Henry Dominguez own the rising star who was claimed at Hollywood Park for $25,000 in late 2010. She earned $60,000 from her fifth career win. Twelve Twenty Two was a perfect four for four this meet and will probably be named Sunland Park’s top older mare of the meet.

Bob Baffert’s American Story finished second, four lengths in front of the pace setting Hayley’s Halo. The latter had won four straight races including three straight stakes wins for trainer Henry Dominguez.

Attitude E Racer, a full brother to stakes winner Fullofenergy, began a big day for trainer Joel Marr by winning the $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby. Overlayed at 24-1 odds, Attitude E Racer dominated his peers in the one and one-sixteenth mile route and won by 2 and 1/4 lengths. Carlos Madeira rode the three-year-old gelding for owners Michael Stinson and H. Joseph Allen. The winner’s check was worth $60,000. Loyal supporters of the talented New Mexico-bred received $50 on a $2 win ticket. Sapello Cantador and Cake and Candy wound up second and third, respectively.

Owners Joseph Allen and Michael Stinson of trainer Joel Marr hit pay dirt for the second time by winning the $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks with the fast Iplaytricks. The former sprinter extended her speed beautifully in the New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks at one and one-sixteenth miles. Under a perfect ride from Carlos Madeira, Iplaytricks shot to the front with 3 furlongs to go, and the filly never looked back en route to a near 5 length score. Despite stumbling at the start, the high powered daughter of Desert God won convincingly in a time of 1:46.87. The 6-1 shot earned $60,000 from her third career win. Ghostly Beach finished safely in second place, one and one-half lengths in front of Tennis Star.

She Moves scored an upset win at over 12-1 odds in the $120,000 La Coneja Stakes at five and one half furlongs. The former claimer has thrived under trainer Martin Weston.  The Ghostly Moves mare won by 2 lengths under jockey Ramsey Zimmerman in wire to wire fashion. Charles Trimble and Tommy Gunstream of Bovina, Texas are the winning owners. First place was worth $72,000.

Multiple stakes winning mare Cali Baby closed ferociously in the final furlong but ran out of real estate. The five-year-old mare trained by Eric Mikkelson had to settle for second place. She earned $24,600 for C.P. Hourigan and the UKUSA Stables. Tricky R. finished third, beaten nearly 4 lengths.
