Kc Royal Flash wins a frantic
finish in $110,000 Challenger Six Handicap
Sunland Park, NM - Dec. 17, 2011 - Kc Royal Flash charged home to
win a frantic finish in the $110,000 Challenger Six Handicap at
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday.
Dismissed as a 10-1 long shot, the John Augustine Stakes winner from
Albuquerque had saved up a powerful effort for the 870 yard feature
written for New Mexico-breds. Under a bold ride from Tony Guymon, Kc
Royal Flash unleashed a sling shot move from sixth place in upper
stretch to overwhelm his front running opponents. The capable sorrel
gelding by Sixes Royal found an opening after racing four-wide
around the turn. Kc Royal Flush had all the momentum in the final
100 yards and defeated Bullets Brother by a neck at the wire. The
winner returned a generous $22 on a $2 win ticket.
Trained by Dominic Duree, Kc Royal Flush capped off a terrific year
by scoring his second stakes win at 870 yards. The four-year-old has
developed a terrific closing style and is one of the leaders in this
division. He stopped the clock in 45.352 seconds and took home a
$66,000 paycheck for winning owners Kathryn Maynard and Carla Feerer
of Thoreau, New Mexico. Overall, the consistent hitter has 5 wins, 8
seconds and 6 thirds from 28 career tries. His bankroll is nearing
the $200,000 plateau.
2-1 second favorite Bullets Brother looked like a winner in deep
stretch. The New Mexico Cup 870 yard Championship winner had put
away a stubborn Corona Dream after a stretch long battle, but he had
no answers for the fast charging winner. Well ridden by Vicente
Grajeda, the runner-up performed gamely after starting in the number
eight position. The blue roan gelding earned $24,200 for owners
Martin Orona, Sr. and Veronica Gonzalez. The multiple stakes winner
holds a career bankroll worth more than $437,000.
Corona Dream finished one and one-quarter lengths back in third. Brt
Opulence, the post time favorite, closed in the late stages to earn
fourth place, a nose behind Corona Dream. The 2-1 shot completed a
healthy $1 superfecta worth $1,690.00.
