Garretsghostlygirl speeds to victory in
$110,000 La Senora Stakes
Sunland Park, NM - Jan. 14, 2012 - Garretsghostlygirl roared to a
dominant front running win in the $110,000 La Senora Stakes at
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday. The former $10,000
claimer has blossomed under the care of trainer Justin Evans. She
displayed a powerful burst of speed en route to a stylish three and
three-quarter length victory in the 6 furlong stakes race for New
Mexico-bred three-year-old fillies.
Coming off a third place finish in an allowance race at Zia Park On
Nov. 14, Garretsghostlygirl was let go be the betting public at
nearly 8-1 odds. She responded eagerly from the short vacation with
a stellar performance. The daughter of Ghostly Moves set a strong
pace from an outside draw down the backstretch, and she hit high
gear while turning for home. Following her big move past the quarter
pole, the race was over. Under jockey Miguel Hernandez, the expert
sprinter set brisk fractions of 22.36 and 45.14 seconds and simply
glided home in a time of 1:11.24. The winner was never pressured and
had plenty in reserve. She returned to $17.80 to win.
Since being claimed for $10,000 at SunRay Park last summer,
Garretsghostlygirl has turned into a sprinting powerhouse winning 3
of 6 starts. She picked up a $66,000 prize for the MJ Racing.
Evans earned his first stakes win at Sunland Park Racetrack and
Casino. He is currently one of the leading Thoroughbred trainers.
After blowing the start, Hot For You ran a commendable race to
salvage second place. After breaking last, she roared into
contention after the first quarter mile under jockey Martin Bourdieu.
The
Gold Case filly continued to try hard but could not cut into the
margin held by the winner. The runner-up earned $22,550 for won
owner R.D. Hubbard. The quality sophomore is trained by Poppy Aldavaz.
Easy Loving Who finished a distant third under jockey Ken Tohill.
The 2-time winner is trained by Joel Marr.
Quinton’s Doll Who, the
8-5 favorite lost momentum in the stretch after chasing the winner.
Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:25 p.m.
