First Blazin Love wins $286,364 Shue Fly
Sunland Park, NM - January 7, 2012 - First Blazin Love scored his
fourth win in five starts after a rapid fire victory in the 40th
running of the $286,364 Shue Fly at Sunland Park Racetrack and
Casino on Saturday.
Ridden by the nation’s leading Quarter Horse jockey G.R. Carter,
First Blazin Love came away from the gates like a jet. The chestnut
colt by Chicks a Blazin took the lead and increased the pressure on
his rivals throughout the 400 yard dash for New Mexico bred foals of
2009. First Blazin Love edged clear in the final yards to win by a
half length in a time of 19.15 seconds.
Trained by the nation’s leading Quarter Horse conditioner Paul
Jones, First Blazin Love beat a talented field including Call Me A
Blazn Chic and Pk Bay. He earned $134,591 for owners D. Johnson,
Lisa Saumell and Johnny C. Martinez. Saumell is also the assistant
trainer. A $2 win ticket on First Blazin Love was worth $20.00. He
earned a 92 speed index from his first career stakes win.
Fury of the Storm, a 21-1 long shot, was all out to finish second.
The runner-up trained by Roberto Sanchez finished a nose in front of
Pk Bay. Fury of the Storm made steady progress but could not
threaten the winner. The Furyothewind colt earned $51,546 for the SM
Cattle Export Company and Jaime Dominguez. He completed a lucrative
$1 exacta worth $137.50.
Pk Bay finished a very game third after a troubled start. The
Brooktone Bay gelding regained his balanced and produced another
stellar effort. Under jockey Alejandro Medellin, PK Bay surged in
the final 50 yards and just missed second. The Fred Danley trainee
was a close second in last spring’s New Mexico Spring Futurity
behind Osbaldo. He raced at 9-2 odds on Saturday and earned $31,500.
He completed an explosive $1 trifecta worth $2,120.70.
The top qualifier Call Me A Blazn Chic experienced a slow start and
broke in sixth position. The stakes winning filly launched a serious
bid along the rail but did not have enough in the final stages. The
6-5 favorite under jockey Vicente Grajeda settled for a close fourth
place finish. The New Mexico Classic Cup Futurity winner is also
trained by Roberto Sanchez.
