New Derby Announced at
Sandy Downs, Details of Hawthorne Futurity Set January 21, 2011 - The date and payment schedule for the third running of the Hawthorne Futurity at Sandy Downs in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has been announced. The track also will run a new derby this year. The $10,000-added open futurity, with an estimated purse of $35,000 at 350 yards, will be run July 30 with trials on July 15. The first nomination payment is due March 15. The race is the third leg of the Dutch Masters III Triple Crown Bonus, which pays $25,000 to the owner of a horse that wins the three sponsored futurities at Emmett, Jerome and Idaho Falls. There is also a points system that awards $5,000 in bonuses based on finishes in the trials and finals of the three races. The track also announced a new race, the $7,500-added Hadtobenuts Derby. Also set for July 30 with trials on July 15 and the first payment due on March 15, the open race will be run at 400 yards. The winner will receive a free breeding to Hadtobenuts, a Grade 1-placed stakes winner who stands at Hawthorne Animal Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho. The Hadtobenuts Derby is sponsored by the stallion’s owners, Dan and Connie Moon, while the Hawthorne Futurity is sponsored by Hawthorne Animal Hospital and Dr. Lonna Gerstner.
