Zoomin On By Tops Merial
Distaff Sam Houston Challenge Trials
AQHA - Houston, TX - March 19, 2011 - Mickey Tiner's
Zoomin On By was the top qualifier after two trials were
contested Saturday night for the Merial Distaff Sam Houston
Challenge at Sam Houston Race Park.
After two of the original 12 Bank of America Challenge-enrolled
fillies and mares scratched, the remaining 10 trial competitors
will get to run back on April 2 in the $28,500 final.
In addition to the purse, the winner will also receive the first
invitation to the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship
(G1) to be run on Bank of America Challenge Championships Night.
Zoomin On By, a Grade 2 finalist last season, completed her 2011
debut in :20.295 for 400 yards to defeat Ms Riptide by a neck.
Ridden by Jose Alvarez, the Shazoom 4-year-old is trained by
Judd Kearl.
The $2,111 trial winnings pushed the brown mare's earnings to
just under $40,000. Last season, she qualified to both the Sam
Houston Derby (G2) and the TQHA Sires' Cup Derby (RG3). Fresh
Water Farms bred the filly in Oklahoma from the Strawflyin Buds
mare Fast Jeans.
Also saddled by Kearl, Ms Riptide held on to the second-fastest
clocking of :20.321. The daughter of champion and 2010 leading
second-crop sire Ocean Runaway is a homebred for James Cordell
and was ridden by David Alvarez.
A 4-year-old mare out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Sixes Ms Perry,
Ms Riptide was also making her 2011 debut. Last season the
multiple derby qualifier finished second in the Adequan Sam
Houston Derby Challenge (G3) and third in the TQHA Sires' Cup
Derby (RG3) while also qualifying to the Dash For Cash
Derby(G1).
