LOUISIANA SENATOR CRUSHES TRACK RECORD, GLIDES IN LEO STAKES

OKLAHOMA CITY – March 26, 2011 - Louisiana Senator is dominating the Remington Park older horse series of stakes races this season. He won the Eastex Handicap on March 6 by a length and made things look even easier in taking Saturday’s Grade 1, $100,000 Leo Stakes while obliterating the 400-yard track record.

Purchased just two months ago at the Heritage Place Sale in Oklahoma City for $48,000 by the Louisiana Senator Syndicate of Llano, Texas, the 5-year-old horse is trained by Heath Reed and was handled once again by G.R. Carter. Louisiana Senator cruised home in the Leo Stakes and still sliced over three-tenths of a second of the track record, crossing the finish in :19.101 over a fast track. The former mark of :19.34 was set by Diamond For Jess in the 2010 Remington Park Derby.

Competing in stakes company again in less than three weeks from his Eastex win was not a concern for Reed after he tracked the horse earlier this week. “G.R. was coming back on him on Wednesday morning and just yelled ‘Yeah!’ I thought then that he must be ready.”

Away from the starting gate in quick order, Louisiana Senator increased his advantage on the lead throughout the Leo Stakes, opening up by over two lengths at one point before Carter simply became a passenger and let the horse come home without urging.

“He’s really on top of his game,” Carter noted. “He is just really focused right now. He warms up like a champion and just goes to the gate and stands there and makes the jockey’s job real easy. He’s really a professional and really put on a good performance.

Streakin Down, runner-up to the winner in the Eastex, was once again relegated to second. Separate Bet, winner of the 2009 Leo Stakes, showed a flash of his past brilliance in running third, a half-length behind Streakin Down.

The wagering favorite at 2-1 odds, Louisiana Senator paid $6.20 to win, $3.40 to place and $3.40 to show. Streakin Down returned $3.40 to place and $2.80 to show. Separate Bet paid $4.20 to show.

Bred in California by Vinewood Farms, Louisiana Senator is by Jess Louisiana Blue from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Perfection. The Leo Stakes was his sixth win from 16 career starts with four of the scores taking place at Remington Park. Earning $60,000, Louisiana Senator has pushed his overall bankroll to $327,908.

The Leo Stakes is run in honor of Leo, a foundation sire in American Quarter Horse Racing who stood the bulk of his career through four decades in Oklahoma.
