LG
Jet takes home the Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders’ Derby
Portland, OR—Feb. 20, 2012 - LG Jet made it four wins in a row on
Monday as he cruised to a win in the $20,000 Oregon Thoroughbred
Breeders’ Derby at Portland Meadows.
Sent off as the heavy 3/5 favorite, LG Jet had to battle early on
as both Lil Red Rockstar and Suesawme both not only pressured him,
but forced him to take a very wide journey on the first turn. Jockey
Luis Torres kept his runner out in the clear as those three went
into the far turn, and Torres and LG Jet started to edge clear and
opened up a big lead in mid-stretch. LG Jet won by three and half
over Slew the Cat who closed up to finish second. Captain Gavel
finished up in third. The final time for the mile was 1:41.88. LG
Jet returned $3.40 for the win.
In the Oregon Ms. Stakes it was Slewzy’s Gold and jockey Mark
Anderson who went right to the lead and never looked back, scoringa
hard fought half length victory. However after reviewing the start
of the race, the Stewards ruled that Slewzy’s Gold broke inward and
caused sufficient interference against Kenzie Carolina at the start,
so Slewzy’s Gold was disqualified and placed third, behind Kenzie
Carolina. The disqualification moved Bahati Gold up to the winning
position for trainer Neil Knapp and jockey Javier Matias. Bahati
Gold returned$4.40 for the win.
Matias also scored a victory in the $12,250PortlandMeadows
Championship Bonus Challenge aboard BCR Buds for All. Sent off at
5/1, BCR Buds For All broke last and quickly made his way through
the field. With just 50 yards to go he was still third, but he
exploded between horses to get up for the win. BCR Buds For All is
owned by Jeff Steadman and trained by Bill Hoburg. BCR Buds For All
returned $12.40 for the win and the final time for the 400 yards was
20.23seconds.
