300-, 330- AND 400-YARD WORLD
RECORDS VERIFIED
April 28, 2010 - Four world records –
one at 300 yards, two at 330 yards and one at 400 yards – have been declared
official by the
American Quarter Horse Association. All four were set at Sunland Park in New
Mexico.
On April 18, In Famous Caper set a world-record time of :14.667 at 300 yards.
The previous mark of :14.678 was set by Fast Prize Zoom in 2008. In Famous
Caper, a 5-year-old gelding, set the mark and earned a 108 speed index while
winning an allowance race by a length. In his previous out, he won the Mesilla
Valley Speed Handicap (RG2). In Famous Caper is owned by Ramon Gonzalez Jr., and
was trained by Andres Gonzalez and ridden by Alejandro Medellin. In Famous Caper
was bred by MJ Farms and is by leading sire Dash Ta Fame out of the Kipper Kelly
(TB) mare Capercaillie. He has won eight of 27 starts and earned $195,143.
On March 30, Dun On Project set a world record at 330 yards of :16.062, breaking
the record of :16.175 set by Authorized Cash in 2003. Bred and owned by Anwar
Elias' 21 Partnership of El Paso, Texas, Dun On Project is a 4-year-old mare by
Dunit Runnin out of the Special Project mare On A Project. Dun On Project set
the record, earning a 127 speed index, while winning a $6,250 claiming race. She
was ridden by Freddie Martinez and trained by Eduardo Gonzalez. She finished a
half length in front of MB Gochicor, who ran the distance in :16.146. An 18-mph
tail wind was recorded. The winner of two of five starts, with $22,740 in
earnings, Dun On Project is one of eight starters sired by Dunit Runnin, an
11-year-old son of Runaway Winner. She is the first starter for her dam.
On April 10, CD Frontier Justice lowered that 330-yard record to :15.999, good
for a 129 speed index. The 3-year-old gelding is a homebred for Fredda Draper of
Ruidoso Downs, and set the record while winning an allowance race by 1 length. A
10-mph tail wind was recorded. CD Frontier Justice was ridden by Larry Payne and
trained by Carl Draper. He has now won two of three starts and earned
$22,480. By Desirio, CD Frontier Justice is out of the Super Duper Couper mare
Super Perla Negra. His half sister Jenuine Joy on April 25 won the Four Corners
Senora Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.
On April 3, Double Down Special set the 400-yard world record of :18.613,
breaking the :18.735 record set by First Moonflash in 2008. Owned by Vanessa
Bartoo of Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, the 3-year-old gelding set the
record while winning the West Texas Derby (G3) by a length and earned a 107
speed index. Trained by John Stinebaugh, he was ridden by Salvador Martinez.
Double Down Special is by The Down Side out of the Special Effort mare Pamper Me
Special. Bred by Bob and Terry Gaston, the gelding has won four of 11 starts and
earned $150,150.
