FILLY SAYS GOODBYE WITH A KISS TO RIVALS IN JOHN DEERE CALIFORNIA TRIALS

CYPRESS, CA. - AUGUST 13, 2010 - Trainer Paul Jones always believed that Marcelo Jorge’s The Goodbye Kisser was among his barn’s most promising 2-year-olds of 2010. The First Down Dash filly proved her trainer right, as she disposed of eight rivals in easy fashion while posting the fastest 350-yard qualifying time of :17.475 in the second of three trials to the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Bred by Bob Moore Farms LLC., The Goodbye Kisser began her career with an impressive 1 ¾ length victory at Los Alamitos on April 10. Not being eligible to any of the million dollar futurities, The Goodbye Kisser was shipped to Ruidoso Downs with hopes of supplementing her to the Rainbow Futurity. That did not pan out for her connections, as the filly suffered a minor injury and needed some time off. She returned to Los Alamitos with a third place finish on July 30 – an effort that according to her showed off her rust.

“She needed a race after her long layoff,” Jones said. “I always liked her and felt that she would do better in her second start after her time off.”
Ridden by Carlos Huerta in this race, The Goodbye Kisser has now won two of three career starts. She is one of 10 runners that will return for the John Deere California regional final on Friday, August 27.

The first trial also belonged to a baby sired by First Down Dash. David and Ross Hinkins’ First To Divulge posted his third victory in as many starts while defeating Kindergarten Futurity finalist Carburator by a nose. First To Divulge’s previous wins included a solid ½ length victory in a trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity. The John Deere California final will be his stakes debut. First To Divulge, who is eligible to the other million dollar futurities that will be held at the Orange County track this year, covered his trial in a time of :17.566. Bobby Cox’s Carburator lost for only the second time in five career starts. The Azoom gelding had easily accumulated wins and his only previous loss was a fifth place finish in the Kindergarten.

The third trial went to Don and Peggy Boyle’s Current Sea, as the Separatist gelding outdueled Like A Zephyr by a nose. Current Sea is out of the same mare that produced multiple Grade 1 winner and champion Strawkins. The Boyles bred the winner of his last two starts. Current Sea’s victory came against a very productive field that ended up featuring five of the 10 qualifiers to the John Deere California finale.

The complete list of qualifiers is as follows: The Goodbye Kisser (:17.475), First To Divulge (:17.566), Carburator (:17.576), Gossipaboutthis (:17.632), Corazon Valiente (:17.653), Current Sea (:17.656), Like A Zephyr (:17.661), Gimme Corona (:17.665), MB One Day Conanas (;17.712), and Exotic Camila (:17.723).
