Jazz Be First
Tops Hialeah Derby Finalists
Hialeah, FL – Dec. 17, 2011 -
Alejandro Medina's Jazz Be First won the first of three Hialeah
Derby trials on Saturday and is the fastest qualifier to the
December 31, $100,000 final.
Prepped by Ricardo Martinez and
ridden by Alex Baldillez Jr., Jazz Be First went 440 yards in
:21.402 while earning a 104 speed index and defeating third-fastest
qualifier Makeover Moment by 1 ½ lengths. The California-bred colt
by Bono Jazz was making his first start since April 16, when he ran
seventh in the Grade 2, $50,900 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes at
Remington Park.
Jazz Be First has won five of 11
races, including two stakes, and has banked $132,173.
Second-fastest qualifier Wagon To
Hollywood won the third trial by 1 ¼ lengths as the 6-5 favorite.
The PYC Paint Your Wagon colt races for Narciso Flores and is
trained by Heath Taylor.
