Favored Ann Jemima Scores in Perseverance
Stakes
Hialeah, FL Jan. 15, 2012 - Lisa Joneson's Ann Jemima earned her
first stakes victory in Sunday's $22,375 Perseverance Stakes for
fillies and mares at Hialeah Park.
Ridden by Alex Baldillez Jr. for trainer Guillermo Valdivia, Ann
Jemima covered 330 yards in :16.577 and posted a 106 speed index
while being aided by a 12-mph tail wind. The homebred 4-year-old
mare's margin of victory was a neck from Iama PYC.
Ann Jemima returned a $6.80 win mutuel as the 2-1 favorite in the
field of nine. The mare's sire, Country Chicks Man, is an
11-year-old stallion by the late Chicks Beduino and the AQHA
champion aged stallion in 2006. Country Chicks Man won 10 stakes and
banked $736,793 during his 38-race career, and his top earners
include Sumokin, the winner of last year's $426,624 Black Gold
Futurity Championship (RG3) at Will Rogers Downs, and Knuckles O
Toole, the runner-up in the 2010 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at
Remington Park.
Country Chicks Man is owned by Rafter SM Ranch, and he stands for a
$3,000 fee at Bob Moore Farms at Norman, Oklahoma.
Ann Jemima's dam, Mea Brick House, is a winning 15-year-old daughter
of Rare Form and a half sister to two stakes winners, including Roto
Rooster, the winner of the 2005 Marathon National Stakes (G1) at Los
Alamitos. Mea Brick House has produced three winners from five
starters. Ann Jemima's half sister, Chicksicle, ran second in the
December 27 Biscayne Stakes at Hialeah.
Racing in Florida, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Indiana, Ann Jemima has won
four of 18 starts, and the $13,425 winner's share of the
Perseverance Stakes purse pushed her bankroll to $55,267. The mare
was a finalist in the 2010 Governor's Stakes at Hoosier Park.
Eye Opening Favorite, Kinky Boots, Jacis Flashy Girl, Go Mary Be
Famous, Aquafina, Marys Corazon, and One Famous Cookie completed the
official order of finish.
Marys Corazon crossed the wire third, but the stakes-winning mare
was disqualified and placed eighth for lugging in.
Runner-up Iama PYC is a gray 4-year-old mare by PYC Paint Your Wagon
who has won two of 11 races and has earned $31,636 for her owner,
Jose R. Vasquez. Iama PYC was coming off of a third-place finish in
a 220-yard, $6,250 non-winners-of-three claiming dash at Hialeah on
December 23.
A 4-year-old daughter of Mr Eye Opener racing for Dan I. Frazier,
Eye Opening Favorite has banked $47,472 from 13 outs. The mare's
three victories include the 300-yard, $22,500 Foxy Lady Stakes on a
