Chi Ter Wins Sawgrass Stakes
Hialeah, FL Feb. 5, 2012 - Chi Ter broke sharply from post 1 and
was hand ridden to a 1 1/4-length win in Sunday's 440-yard, $22,750
Sawgrass Stakes at Hialeah Park.
Under jockey Cody Smith, who rode Chi Ter for owner Mary Passmore
and trainer Jackie Kirby, the 5-year-old gelding covered his
quarter-mile trip in :21.457 while earning a 101 speed index. Sent
to post as the even-money favorite in the field of eight older
runners, Chi Ter returned a $4 win mutuel.
Chi Ter was bred in Oklahoma by Herb and Doris Pierce. The gelding's
sire, Granite Lake, is a 12-year-old son of First Down Dash who won
the 2003 West Texas Derby (G2) at Sunland Park. Granite Lake's top
runners include graded stakes winner Cold Granite Stone and Fly On
Lake. The stallion is owned by a syndicate and stands at Haras Prata
in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
Chi Ter's dam, This Chicks Stylish, is an unraced 17-year-old
daughter of Chicks Beduino. The mare has produced four winners from
five starters, including Make Out Artist, a stallion by Make It
Anywhere who won the '09 Canterbury Park Derby in Minnesota and ran
second to Dylans Dandy in that season's Grade 3, $40,500 Keokuk
Stakes at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.
Chi Ter's second dam, the Bayou Bar mare Private Style, was a stakes
winner in Idaho and Washington in 1985.
All told, Chi Ter has won 12 of 30 races, and the $13,650 winner's
share of the Sawgrass Stakes purse pushed his earnings to $283,260.
The gelding has won three consecutive races, and his stakes resume
includes a neck victory in last year's 440-yard, $60,000 Hialeah
Invitational Stakes.
Fast N Furrious, Legendary Express, PLS Clock Watcher, Talented
Musician, Feedingmygator, Blood Red Cadillac, and Sassy Shaelan
completed the order of finish.
Fast N Furrious races for Richard Joneson, who also bred the sorrel
4-year-old son of AQHA champion Country Chicks Man. The stallion has
banked $43,576 from 13 outs, and his four victories includes the
December 31, $20,000 Hialeah Sophomore Invitational Stakes.
A 4-year-old stallion by champion Ocean Runaway campaigned by Sammy
K. Massey and a finalist in American Runaway's 2010 Ruidoso Futurity
(G1), Legendary Express was coming off of a ninth-place finish in
the January 22 City of Hialeah Stakes. Legendary Express has won two
of 14 starts and has earned $46,567.
