Daddy Nose Best Rallies to Win Grade 3 El
Camino Real Derby
Berkeley, CA - Feb. 18, 2012 - Julien Leparoux rode Daddy Nose Best
to a come-from-behind win in the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real
Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.
Trained by Steve Asmussen for owners Bob and Cathy Zollars, Daddy
Nose Best rallied off of the fractions of :23.31, :47.57, and
1:12.28 set by Handsome Mike and All Squared Away, before he reached
the wire in 1:50.46 for his 1 1/8-mile trip on Golden Gate's
synthetic Tapeta surface. Daddy Nose Best's victory was his first in
a stakes race, and it established the bay colt as one of the West
Coast contenders for the May 5, $2-million Kentucky Derby (G1) at
Churchill Downs.
Asmussen saddled the winner of last year's El Camino Real Derby,
Silver Medallion. Daddy Nose Best was making his first start since
December 31, when he ran fifth in the 1-mile, $81,700 Eddie Logan
Stakes on the turf at Santa Anita.
“We came here because of the added distance and his experience over
the turf, which carries over to synthetic,” said Darren Fleming, an
assistant to Asmussen. “Winning the race last year also helped our
decision.
“He's been getting better with time, and he's trained with a
different mindset since his last race,” Fleming added.
Daddy Nose Best was bred in Kentucky by the Patricia Ann Elia Trust.
The colt became the sixth stakes winner from 70 starters sired by
Scat Daddy, an 8-year-old son of Johannesburg who won two Grade 1
during his racing career – the 2006 Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont
Park and the Florida Derby (G1) the following season at Gulfstream
Park.
Scat Daddy has sired the earners of more than $2.05 million. The
stallion stands for a $17,500 fee at Ashford Stud at Versailles,
Kentucky.
Daddy Nose Best is also one of two winners from as many starters
produced by Follow Your Bliss, a 10-year-old daughter of Thunder
Gulch.
A $35,000 buy at the 2010 Keeneland Association September Yearling
Sale, Daddy Nose Best earned $120,000 to boost his bankroll to
$233,623. The colt has won three of nine starts, and his record
includes a third-place finish in last year's $254,000 Summer Stakes
at Woodbine.
Lucky Chappy (IRE) ran second, a nose behind Daddy Nose Best.
Handsome Mike, Unveiled Heat, Russian Greek, Lady Of Fifty, All
Squared Away, Rockinarz Recruit, Senor Rain, and Cahill Chrome
completed the order of finish.
Lucky Chappy earned $40,000 to increased his bankroll to $194,877
from seven starts for his owners, Team Valor International. The bay
colt by High Chaparral (IRE) was coming off of a second-place finish
to Howe Great in the 1 1/16-mile, $100,000 Kitten's Joy Stakes on
the turf at Gulfstream Park on January 21.
Handsome Mike has won one of six races and has banked $80,780 for
owner J. Paul Reddam. The Kentucky-bred colt by Scat Daddy ran
second, 1 ¼ lengths behind winner Stoney Fleece, in the November 27,
$100,000 Generous Stakes (G3) on the turf at Hollywood Park.
