Upsets In Doubleheader at Fonner

Grand Island, NE – March 26, 2011 - by Ty Wyant - It was a day for odd-on favorites to meet their demise when Bach’s Homebrew won the Ogataul Stakes and Nayborhood Affair won the Orphan Kist Stakes during a doubleheader for Nebraska-breds on Saturday at Fonner Park.

Bluestem Farm’s homebred Bach’s Homebrew was the 5-1 second choice in the Ogataul, however he rallied like a solid favorite to score his fifth win in his latest six starts.

Jockey Chris Fackler had Bach’s Homebrew close to the pace and then made a wide move in the 5-horse field to grab the lead from Soda Pop Sam. The Larry Staroscik-trained Bach’s Homebrew went on to win by more than two lengths with a 1:14 time for the six furlongs.

Soda Pop Sam held on for second while 1-5 favorite Reach One More was never a threat and finished third.

A 4-year-old gelded son of Milwaukee Brew, Bach’s Homebrew was making his return to racing after finishing second in a minor stakes at Columbus Park in August. He won 3-straight minor stakes before that second-place finish.

June and Tressa O’Neill’s homebred Nayborhood Affair won the Orphan Kist Stakes in near gate-to-wire fashion. The 6-year-old daughter of Miracle Heights assumed command within the first quarter mile and then drew off to win by nearly four lengths under Ashley Dill.

The Steve Hall-trained Nayborhood Affair was timed in 1:14.20.

Gracie June was second by 10 lengths over 4-5 favorite Lou Lou Larue in the strung-out field of distaffers.

Nayborhood Affair, overlooked at nearly 7-1 odds, was not among the favorites after finishing a lackluster seventh in an allowance race on March 12 when she was returning from a more than 7-month layoff. She won 5-straight races before finishing fifth in her final 2010 start.
