Evangeline Downs to host the 9th annual John Franks Memorial Two-Year-Old in Training Sale

Opelousas, LA, December 21, 2010 - Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino will once again host the John Franks Memorial Two-Year-Old in Training Sale. Evangeline Downs, along with Sale Administrator Stemmans Inc., have announced the dates for the 9th edition of this important Sale that is named after the late Louisiana Oil Baron and multiple Eclipse Award winning Owner/Breeder. The Sale will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 beginning at 10:00am Central Time with the Gallop Preview Show held on Saturday, March, 19, starting at Noon, Central Time.

Both the Sale and the Gallop Preview Show are free and open to the public. As is past years, a pair of races restricted to two-year-olds who pass through the sales ring will be offered in August, 2011 at Evangeline Downs. One race will be for colts & geldings and the other race will be for fillies and each will be run at the distance of 5 ½ furlongs on the main track and offer a purse of $60,000.

Steve Darbonne, Director of Racing Operations at Evangeline Downs stated “The Sale, with its strategic placing and deep talent pool, has become an important part of the racing industry as horseman throughout Louisiana as well as from neighboring jurisdictions look to restock and upgrade their stables for our upcoming 89 night spring/summer meet at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino which begins on Wednesday, April 6th, and runs thru the traditional closing night, Monday, September 5th, Labor Day.” Darbonne added “We will once again host the Sale in our spacious and comfortable Event Center. That, along with our brand new Hotel will provide Consignors, as well as Horsemen and Owners with a more convenient and enjoyable experience.”

Charlotte Clavier, President of Stemmans, Inc., Administrator for the Sale, stated “This sale has grown both in stature and importance and has quickly become the marquee sales event held in Louisiana.” Clavier further stated “With ever increasing and lucrative opportunities available for top flight horses both locally and nationwide, we have made a concerted effort with Consignors and local Breeders to upgrade the Sale in terms of quality and we feel strongly that horsemen and buyers alike will respond in kind. Louisiana, and Evangeline Downs in particular has long been a proving ground with an excellent Juvenile Stakes program, and with those respective programs along with the Louisiana Bred Supplement in place and improving we feel that prospective owners as well as local breeders/consignors have a very realistic opportunity for success.”

Last year’s sale produced total receipts of $1,045,700, an average of more than $7,803 for the 134 juveniles that sold. The Sales topper, at $70,000 was a Kentucky bred Holy Bull colt. The colt was purchased by Cathy Deville on behalf of Crazy C Ranch. In addition to the Sale, there was a Horses-of-Racing-Age dispersal from the Ragin Cajun Stable LLC that featured five Louisiana Bred three-year-olds in Training that sold for a total of $139,000, an average of $27,800.

Entry fee for the Two-Year-Old Sale is $350.00 with a 5 % commission ($300.00 minimum). The entry deadline is Jan 5, 2011. Late entries will have a fee of $500.00 also with a 5 % commission ($300.00 minimum).
