Liberian Freighter Wins
Brubaker Stakes
Del Mar - August 25, 2010 - California-bred Liberian Freighter held on
tenaciously in the final strides to withstand the desperate, late challenge of
even-money favored Hey Elvis and win the featured $93,650 Harry F. Brubaker
Stakes by a nose Wednesday at Del Mar.
Jockey Martin Garcia sent Liberian Freighter to the front shortly after the
start of the mile and one-sixteenth event over the infield grass course. The
five-year-old son of Bertrando rated kindly on the lead and then had enough left
to win in a photo finish.
Quindici Man was third, with Massone fourth in the field of six runners. Sky
Cape and One Track Mind were scratched.
Liberian Freighter, trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale, ran the distance in
1:41.03 and returned $11.40, $4.80 and $3.80 after his seventh victory in 21
starts for owners Shawn Dugan, the estate of Edward Nahem and Charles Winner.
First money of $61,320 increased Liberian Freighter's career earnings to
$481,740.
Hey Elvis, who was piloted by Rafael Bejarano, paid $3.20 and $2.60, while
Quindici Man returned $3.80 to show.
Keyed by the $95 upset by Too Pink in the sixth, there were no perfect tickets
in Wednesday's Pick Six. Thus, there will be a carryover of $127,414 to launch
Thursday's Pick Six.
Wednesday's crowd totaled 11,424.
