Severely injured when kicked by a horse in front of the Fair Grounds stands last Feb. 17, Heitzmann’s life was in jeopardy during those first critical hours and days, but following exploratory surgery that led to the removal of 24 inches of her colon, the wife of local trainer Eric Heitzmann was released from the hospital 10 days later. read more
 

Leaders support Fair Meadows using other tracks for horse races - Tulsa, OK - Feb 4, 2012 - The leaders of the state's two largest horsemen's associations say they support Fair Meadows Racetrack's effort to hold its live races elsewhere should the need arise. Fair Meadows officials said last week that they have had discussions with Will Rogers Downs in Claremore about holding the races there. Read more
 
North Dakota Horse Park could run this summer - Fargo, N.D. -  Feb. 4, 2012 - Horses could be returning to the starting gate in Fargo after a two-year shutdown to pay bills. North Dakota Racing Commission director Winston Satran said Friday the board that runs the horse park has paid off several thousand dollars owed to suppliers and vendors. On January 25, a very unusual flash flood occurred in the town of Cedar Creek, Texas, just outside of Austin, Texas. Former LA. horsemen's association director sentenced to almost four years in prison; Mona Hebert Romero, 53, sentenced to 13 months - Feb. 3, 2012 - Unmoved by his tearful plea for leniency, U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon on Thursday sentenced Sean Alfortish to 46 months in prison for conspiring to rig the elections of the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and then helping himself to money controlled by the agency. The sentence was at the top of the recommended range under federal guidelines, though Alfortish faced up to five years under the law. Fallon also ordered Alfortish to pay $105,105 in restitution to the horsemen's group, and to report to prison on April 2.
 
TVG, Prairie Meadows & Iowa HBPA strike long-term ADW partnership - LOS ANGELES and ALTOONA, IOWA - Feb. 3, 2012 –TVG announced today that it has reached agreement to operate a co-branded Advanced Deposit Wagering (ADW) system on behalf of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and the Iowa Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association (IA HBPA). TVG and Prairie Meadows will extensively market each other’s products and services, including ADW and live racing conducted by Prairie Meadows.
 
Video jackpot game gets a trial in Omaha - Omaha, NE - Feb. 3, 2012 - Fans at Horsemen's Park might have noticed a new addition to the simulcast facility — the installation of 32 Bank Shot machines. Bank Shot, a video jackpot game that is located primarily in bars across the state, was ruled legal in December by the Nebraska Supreme Court. The Court rejected Attorney General Jon Bruning's argument that the Bank Shot games were illegal gambling devices and that they should be removed.
 
Training begins for 17th season at Emerald Downs - AUBURN, WA - Feb. 2, 2012 – The horses were on the track Wednesday as training began for the 81-day meeting that begins Friday, April 13. Snow On the River, with trainer Monique Snow up, was the first horse on the track shortly after 8:30 a.m. The 6-year-old Washington-bred gelding had his chestnut coat slicked by rainfall that yielded to intermittent sun breaks. In other words, typical February weather at Emerald Downs.
