- Feb. 19, 2012 - Noosa Beach was honored as the
2011 Washington Horse of the Year and a champion in
two other divisions at the Washington Thoroughbred
Breeders and Owners Association awards banquet at
Emerald Downs Feb. 18.

Training begins for 17th season at Emerald Downs
- AUBURN, WA - Feb. 2, 2012 – The horses were on the
track Wednesday as training began for the 81-day
meeting that begins Friday, April 13. Snow On the
River, with trainer Monique Snow up, was the first
horse on the track shortly after 8:30 a.m. The
6-year-old Washington-bred gelding had his chestnut
coat slicked by rainfall that yielded to
intermittent sun breaks. In other words, typical
February weather at Emerald Downs.
Former riding champ Paul Frey dies at 73
- AUBURN, WA - Jan. 18, 2012 – Paul Frey, who rode
2,478 winners including riding titles at Longacres
in 1964 and 1966, died of pneumonia Jan. 14 at
Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. A native of
Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Frey, 73, became only
the second jockey to top 100 wins at Longacres while
winning 103 races in 62 days in 1964.
EMERALD DOWNS ANNOUNCES 81-DAY SEASON -
AUBURN, Wash. - Jan. 14, 2012 – The Washington Horse
Racing Commission has approved an 81-day race
meeting at Emerald Downs in 2012. The season is
similar to last year’s, with opening night Friday,
April 13 and closing day Sunday, Sept. 23.

Hialeah, FL, Jan. 2, 2012 – Veteran jockey Bill
Ives, always a popular rider at every track he rode,
went out a winner at Hialeah Park Sunday in the
final ride of his career. Ives piloted Wild N Wicked
Jd, a four-year-old Jackie Kirby trainee, to his
fifth consecutive win in the featured $20,000-added
Beautiful Prairie Stakes at 220 yards.

Breeders and Owners Association presented its 45th
summer yearling on Tuesday, September 6, at the
Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald
Downs racetrack in Auburn. For the second time in
recent history, the WTBOA sale was divided into a
summer yearling session and a mixed horse session.

nominated to the $65,000 Emerald Distaff
to be run Sunday, Aug. 21. That total is
up substantially from both 2009 and 2010
when nine horses were nominated to the
Emerald Distaff.

- July 1, 2011 - “We decided to nominate Noosa Beach
for several reasons,” Doris Harwood said. ”It gives
us multiple options: leasing Noosa Beach, selling
him, or taking him ourselves. Also, his value
increases tremendously if he’s Breeders’ Cup

- June 24, 2011 - The National Thoroughbred Racing
Association (NTRA) announced today that the
Washington Thoroughbred Breeders & Owners
Association (WTBOA) will participate in the NTRA
Legislative Action Campaign’s 1/4% checkoff program,
which supports the NTRA’s federal lobbying and
government relations efforts. Each year, the WTBOA
hosts its Summer Yearling & Mixed Sale, which this
year will take place on September 6 in Auburn, Wash.

PICK 5 WAGER APPROVED FOR EMERALD DOWNS -
AUBURN, Wash. (June 10, 2011) – Emerald Downs will
add a $0.50 Pick 5 to its exotic wagering menu
beginning Friday, June 17. The Washington Horse
Racing Commission approved the new wager at its
monthly meeting Friday.
