EPA orders Downs of Albuquerque to halt discharges - Albuquerque, NM - Jan. 31, 2012 - The Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency has issued an order against the Downs at Albuquerque and EXPO New Mexico to stop discharges into the Rio Grande. The EPA ordered a halt to discharges of animal waste, industrial runoff and other pollutants into the river. The facility has a 93-acre racetrack and casino that accommodates up to 1,400 horses during racing season.
 
Ex-police chief leads Racing Commission - Jan 30, 2012 - Former Raton Police Chief Vince Mares has been appointed executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, a position he had been serving in on an interim basis since September.
 
Trainer Caught Up in Drug Busts - Federal Indictment Charges 15 Men from New Mexico with Drug Trafficking and Financial Crimes

January 28, 2012 — Federal authorities said Friday they've taken down two major drug trafficking and money laundering operations in different parts of New Mexico. Agents have seized caches of drugs, cars, cash, guns and even a tractor from a pecan growing operation near the New Mexico-Texas border.

Audit says Fair in the Red - Santa Fe, NM. — Oct. 21, 2011 - The New Mexico State Fair is running in the red and doesn't have enough money to finance day-to-day operations, according to a new audit that prompted legislators on Thursday to question whether taxpayers should be subsidizing the fair. Auditors for the Legislative Finance Committee said the fair has been losing money for years as revenues and fair attendance dropped, but it has continued to operate because it's not paying some debts. This year's fair ended last month.

Sunland Park Releases Lucrative 2011-12 Stakes Schedule - Sept. 18, 2011 - Sunland Park has released its Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stakes schedules and first condition book for its 2011-12 meet, which opens on December 6.

Sunland Park will run 55 stakes – 35 for Thoroughbreds and 20 for Quarter Horses – worth more than $5.7 million in purses.
