Giacomo to stand
in California Oct. 18, 2011 - Frank
Stronach’s Adena Springs Farm announced today that 2005 Kentucky
Derby winner Giacomo will relocate to Magali Farms in Santa Ynez,
California beginning with the 2012 breeding season.
A nine-year-old son of Horse of the Year Holy Bull, out of the Stop
the Music mare Set Them Free, Giacomo is a half-brother to
multi-millionaire and multiple Grade 1 winner Tiago.
Runner-up in the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity at two, Giacomo circled
a full field in the Kentucky Derby to overtake Closing Argument and
Afleet Alex in the closing strides to win the Run for the Roses.
Giacomo also accounted for the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in his
four-year-old season. In all, he won or placed in 8 stakes from two
to four and earned $2,537,316.
“We are very pleased to welcome Giacomo to Magali Farms and look
forward to offering California breeders the only opportunity to
breed to a Kentucky Derby winner in our state,” said Magali Farms
manager Tom Hudson.
“Giacomo won or placed in graded stakes in California at two, three
and four while based there; we expect him to be well-received
locally,” added Adena Springs General Manager Eric Hamelback.
With his first foals just 3-year-olds this year, Giacomo is the sire
of nine current stakes horses, four juvenile stakes horses,
including two-year old stakes winners Go Vivian Go and Jake Mo,
winner of the recent Prairie Gold Juvenile Stakes. Giacomo’s 2011
record will rank him second among all California sires by earnings,
winners, stakes winners and stakes horses. The 2012 stud fee will be
announced at a later date.
