Will Rogers Closes Successful Meet
AQHA - Nov. 19, 2011 - Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs has concluded its most
successful year of live racing following an outstanding spring meet and a
stellar fall meet.
For the fall racing meet, Will Rogers Downs saw a 78 percent increase in total
handle and a 30 percent increase in on-track wagering compared to 2010. Overall,
the fall meet’s handle finished at $2.2 million compared to $1.2 million last
year. The meet consisted of 28 race days for Quarter Horses and mixed breeds.
“We really had a great meet this fall,” said Kelly Cathey, racing secretary for
Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. “Not only are the money lines up, but we also
saw an average of 10.5 per start and our entries were up 50 percent compared to
last year. We’re very pleased with the support of the horse racing fans who came
out to watch races this year.”
In its fifth year of operation, Will Rogers Downs earned more than $16 million
in live racing, with $14 million coming in the spring. During the spring, 12 of
32 race days surpassed $500,000 in total wagering. On April 4, the track had a
record one-day total of $958,163.
The spring meet had a staggering 93 percent increase in off-track wagering and a
12 percent growth in on-track wagering to give the track an 86 percent increase
year-over-year.
"This has been an outstanding year for horse racing at Cherokee Casino Will
Rogers Downs,” said Cathey. “It’s easy to look at the numbers and see the
positive difference, but what doesn’t show on paper is the hard work and
dedication our employees and horsemen put forth to achieve these great results.”
