TQHA Yearling Sale Concludes with
Big Increases in Average and Median
July 30, 2011 - With a smaller catalog compared to last year, the two-day TQHA
Yearling Sale concluded on Saturday afternoon with a nearly 25-percent increase
in average and a 33-percent jump in median. The sale was held at the Exposition
Hall at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio.
With 71 fewer head cataloged, consignors enjoyed an average price of $9,325
compared to $7,466 in 2010. The median price came in at $6,000 this year
compared to $4,500 in 2010.
Gross sale receipts were down slightly at $1,697,200 compared to $1,702,300,
however that was to be expected with fewer head selling. Seventy-nine of the 261
head offered did not meet their reserve.
Robert Jenkins purchased the high-selling yearling, Jen Tilly, from Granada
Farms, agent for Kelly Bode, for $100,0000. The Dashin Bye filly out of Grade 2
winner Diamonds For Toni is a half sister to Grade 2 winner Zazoom,
stakes-placed Zoom For Fun and Grade 2-finalist Sixes Diamonds.
R.K. McGeehee purchased Sangamon Hero, the only colt in the sale by leading
first crop sire Valiant Hero, from King Camden Running Horses for $40,000. The
gray colt is out of the stakes-placed Creole Dancer (TB) mare Dancing Turf, the
dam of six winners including Ruidoso Futurity (G1) third-place finisher Maddies
Special Turf and Heritage Place Derby (G1) third-place finisher Tufinureyes.
Bobby Cox was the leading consignor with 12 yearlings totaling $210,500. Robert
and Karen Nunnnally sold seven head for $124,000, and King Camden Running Horses
had six yearlings total $107,500.
Robert Jenkins was the sale's leading buyer with the one purchase, followed by
Joe Flores who bought three head for $79,000, and Mary Thompson signed the
ticket on three head for $75,000.
Stoli led all sires (with two more head selling) with two colts averaging
$33,500. PYC Paint Your Wagon had two head average $28,500, followed by Mr Jess
Perry with two for $23,500 and Bigtime Favorite with two for $22,500.
