Stakes Twosome at Turf Paradise

Phoenix, AZ – Jan. 28, 2012 - Rare Sunset went from gate to wire to win the $35,000 Glendale Handicap and favored Derive won the $35,000 Swift Stakes during a diverse stakes doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Turf Paradise.

The two stakes ranged from the Glendale for fillies and mares at one-and-one-sixteenth mile on the turf to the Swift, a five-and-one-half furlong dash for older sprinters on the main track.

Canadian Sunshine Stable’s Rare Sunset, the 22-11 second choice, responded to a pacesetting ride by jockey Jocelyne Kenny. The seven-year-old mare set all the fractions and had enough in reserve to pull out to the one-and-one-half length win over Hard Seven in the stretch.

Rare Sunset was timed in 1:41.89.

Sweeetsomerwine was third in the seven-horse field.

The Miguel Angel Silva-trained Rare Sunset scored her fifth win from eight career starts at Turf Paradise and came off a one-half length win over the turf course at the Phoenix track. The Glendale was also her eighth win in 16 starts on the grass.

Back in the fall, she also raced to back-to-back wins at Turf Paradise. She won an optional-claiming before taking the Queen of the Green Handicap.

Rick Weist’s Derive, the 9-5 favorite, stepped up to the stakes ranks to gain his fourth-straight win with his three-quarter-length win in the Swift Stakes. The six-year-old gelded son of Cozzene was clocked in 1:01.90 under Jorge Carreno.

Saratoga Boot finished second, more than three lengths ahead of third-place finisher Absolutely Cool.

Derive started his winning streak for trainer Robertino Diodoro when he arrived at Turf Paradise in October and won a five-furlong conditioned allowance race. He followed with a pair of six-furlong wins, one for a $10,000 claiming tag and then for a $12,500 price.

Derive has won six of his 20 starts with five seconds and four third-place efforts.
