Ribald sets new 6 furlong track record; Miguel Hernandez wins 3 on the day to take lead in standings

Sunland Park, NM - Jan. 3, 2012 - Ribald scorched his way through the stretch to set a new 6 furlong track record at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Tuesday.

The sharp Justin Evans trainee pulled clear of his starter allowance rivals in the 8th race to win by four and three-quarter lengths in a fast time of 1:07.60. Under a perfect ride from Miguel Hernandez, the seven-year-old California-bred son of Unusual Heat looked he was shot out of a cannon in upper stretch. The bay gelding blasted away from Western Pine and the pace setting Happy Humor to win under a hand ride. The new benchmark bested the former track record set by Rapper SS of 1:08.01 in 2009. The latter won the Riley Allison Futurity in 2007.

Ribald closed readily into a hot pace of 21.60 and 43.48 seconds for the first two calls. Racing for the BAM Racing LLC, he is a 5-time winner from 21 starts.

Miguel Hernandez won a total of three races on the card and has taken over the lead in the Thoroughbred rider standings. Hernandez won the 5th race with Northwood Flyer, the 8th race with Ribald and the 11th race with Super Champ. He leads a very competitive jockey colony with 15 wins in the young season.

Live racing resumes on Friday at 12:25 p.m. The $286,364 Shue Fly is the featured event on Saturday. Red Lead headlines the field in Sunday’s $50,000 Winsham Lad Handicap at one mile and 70 yards.
