Parties interested possible racing in Montana
Missoula, MT - Feb. 17, 2011 - An unidentified Montana horseman has expressed interest in staging race meets at Missoula and Great Falls next summer after the departure of Eric Spector and Montana Entertainment. "I haven't seen anything on paper yet, but I've got a good feeling," Steve Earle, director of the Missoula County Fairgrounds, said Thursday. In fact, Earle said, he's had inquiries from several people, from both in state and out, about the possibility of filling Missoula's two August dates at the Western Montana Fair. Earle and the county applied for those dates, Aug. 12 and 13, even as it became clear Spector and his company wouldn't be back. Montana Entertainment revived racing for two days last year in Missoula after three summer fairs without the popular draw. Spector also produced Great Falls' six-day race meet for the second year in a row. He owned the more lucrative simulcast rights in Montana, but had to abdicate those late last year. A horsemen's group and other interests blocked feeds to Spector's off-track betting sites from some of the bigger tracks in the country in protest of the company. Earle said Spector settled with the county before year's end for unpaid services left over from last year's meet, paying the fairgrounds roughly $7,500. read more here: Missoulian.com by KIM BRIGGEMAN of the Missoulian |
