Optimism is rampant among horse breeders, but Dennis Albaugh and Jason Loutsch of Ankeny have extra reason for excitement this year.

March 29, 2011 - Albaugh and son-in-law Loutsch own the mare Whisperifyoudare, who is about to give birth to perhaps the most regally-bred thoroughbred ever foaled in Iowa.

Whisperifyoudare is one of Iowa’s top breeding mares, having produced Iowa-bred champions Maya’s Storm and Jumpifyoudare. Now, she is in foal to Curlin, the 2007 and 2008 horse of the year, and the foal is due in the first week of April.

If the birth goes well, it is believed the foal will be the first Iowa-bred ever sired by a two-time horse of the year. However, none of Curlin’s foals are of racing age yet, so how good of a sire he will be is still unknown.

“We’re excited about it, but you just never know what kind of a stallion a horse is going to be,” Loutsch said. “We took a chance and Whisperifyoudare has thrown some good horses, so we’re hopeful.”

No matter how good the breeding is, the result depends on luck. In 1968 and 1969, the mare Somethingroyal was bred to Bold Ruler. The first foal was a filly called The Bride, who was winless in four starts.

The second result was better: She gave birth to a colt named Secretariat.
