Lloyd optimistic about marketplace, Barretts October sale

Oct. 11, 2011 - Kim Lloyd, vice president of sales for Barretts Equine Ltd., expects a strong 2011 October yearling sale for two main reasons—a high-quality catalog and a nice showing from previous yearling sales this summer and fall.

The roller-coaster Thoroughbred auction market after the global economic crisis that began in 2008 made life testing for sales company’s officials, consignors, and especially breeders.

After strong showings at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings, the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred preferred yearling sale, and the Keeneland September yearling sale as well as the recent encouraging results at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale, it appears for the first time in a long time that there is some stability in the marketplace.

“I was just talking to some horsemen over at [Santa Anita] and they didn’t get all of the horses that they wanted to buy over at Keeneland. It was hard to buy, it was a very good sale—really good sale with a strong market. So they didn’t get all of the horses they wanted to buy there,” Lloyd said. “We’re left with people looking for horses. This will be a stronger sale from what we’ve seen. We expect an uptick all around.”

Barretts has cataloged 253 yearlings for the October sale. The opening session is slated for 7 p.m. PDT on Tuesday night with the second session scheduled for 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Lloyd said the quality of the individual horses physically really elevates this year’s catalog above previous offerings.
