JOCKEY LANCE BULOCK WINS LINDY AWARD MUNGER, CHRISTIAN DURKAN AWARD RECIPIENTS

AUBURN, Wash. (Sept. 24, 2011) – Jockey Lance Bullock and trainers Don Munger and Billy Christian will receive special awards when Emerald Downs completes its 16th season of Thoroughbred racing Sunday.

The 19-year-old Bullock will receive the Lindy Award, named in honor of the legendary Clerk of Scales Lindy Aliment, while the 87-year-old Munger and 33-year-old Christian will be co-honorees of the Martin Durkan Award, named in honor of the late state senator and longtime proponent for Thoroughbred racing in Washington.

The Lindy Award, voted by the jockeys, is presented to a rider for accomplishment and sportsmanship throughout the season. The Martin Durkan Award, chosen by Director of Racing Bret Anderson and staff, honors trainers that exhibit leadership, cooperation, sportsmanship and excellence on and off the track throughout the 82-day meeting.

Bullock, who has ridden 12 winners in his inaugural Emerald Downs season, hails from a leading Northwest racing family. His father, Steve Bullock, ranks 11th all-time in Emerald Downs training wins, and his uncle, Gallyn Mitchell, is that track’s all-time leading jockey in both wins and stakes wins.

Christian, a native of Goldendale, also grew up around the racetrack. His father William was a jockey, and his late mother Patty was a trainer. Billy has enjoyed one of his best seasons with seven wins and was instrumental in helping to fill early season races, both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse.

Munger has done it all in his 40-plus seasons in racing. The WWII veteran continues to breed, own and train a string of runners, and this season has compiled an 8-21-16 record in 106 starts.
