Heat Wave Cancels Horse Races

ALTOONA, Iowa - July 20, 2011 - KCCI TV 8 reported that Prairie Meadows officials canceled racing on Tuesday because of the extreme heat.

The races were canceled shortly before the first race after jockeys voted not to ride, saying the 97-degree temperature with a 111-degree heat index made conditions hazardous for the horses.

"Even very well-conditioned racehorses, with the heat index this high, how can you feel comfortable asking them for everything they have to stay on their feet?" said jockey Ken Tohill.

Officials said they do no plan to make up the racing day, but may card extra racing days to make up for the nine races lost Tuesday, said Director of Racing Derron Heldt.

The thoroughbred season runs through Aug. 13.
