Havre de Grace Quickly Gets Back to Work

Hot Springs, AR - Feb. 19, 2011 - After going on a "sightseeing trip" when sent for a workout Tuesday morning, Fox Hill Farms' top 4-year-old filly Havre de Grace was pushed through a more vigorous workout Friday at Oaklawn as she continues her winter preparations for the $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) on April 15.

Trainer Larry Jones sent the daughter of Saint Liam in company with the 3-year-old filly Raised With Pride for a half-mile breeze in a 'bullet' 47 3/5 under jockey Jenna Joubert. Raised With Pride - a winner in her only start last year - was clocked in 48 2/5.

Havre de Grace went to the track by herself Tuesday and according to Jones and Joubert, was not paying attention to her job.

"She just had a great old time Tuesday," said Jones Friday morning. "This time she tried to do the same thing, but Jenna was able to get her going after the other horse and she was like 'oh that's what you want me to do.' She took off after her and ended up putting her away pretty easily."

Jones said it puts Havre de Grace back on schedule for a potential return the $100,000 Azeri (G3) March 19, the local prep for the Apple Blossom.

In both her workouts this week, Jones says the encouraging sign coming from Havre de Grace has been her happiness, and that's part of the secret to the success he and his wife, Cindy, have had with several top fillies and mares.

"The thing with (Havre de Grace) is she just likes to have fun," he said. "Coming back today, she still looked like she was having a good time out there. People ask me why I'm good with fillies and mares, and I tell them the key is to just keep them happy. I've learned that thanks to 23 years with Cindy. If I just keep her happy, things turn out alright."
