Greely out at Golden Gate Fields
Berkeley, CA - Nov. 13, 2011 - In a move that new
Golden Gate Fields general manager Joe Morris said was based solely
on economics, Sean Greely has been replaced as racing secretary by
his assistant and stakes coordinator David Jerkens.
"It's strictly a payroll cut," Morris said. "Sean did a great job
over the years, and this is just a restructuring to help get this
company more viable. David has been doing this a long time also, and
it's his first opportunity to be a racing secretary."
Greely was named racing secretary in October 2004, and served during
a period that saw a decline in the quality and quantity of horses
and in betting handle. The racing secretary plans the types of races
and their scheduling through what is known as the condition book.
"I enjoyed my time at Golden Gate Fields, and I know David will do a
great job," Greely said. "They were looking at numbers, and it's
when companies are losing money that they need to make cuts where
they think they should. We had stuff thrown at us all the time, and
just being able to keep the purses fairly steady was something I
could be proud of."
The condition book is set through the end of the fall season Dec.
18, and Jerkens' first book will begin Dec. 26 at the start of the
long winter-spring season.
Jerkens is a familiar name in East Coast racing; David's
grandfather, Allen, is a Hall of Fame trainer, and his father,
Steven, and uncle, James, also train.
