Fred Hutton named Thoroughbred racing secretary at Prairie Meadows

Altoona, IA - Jan. 25, 2012 - Fred Hutton has been hired as the new Thoroughbred racing secretary at Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Iowa, replacing Dan Doocy, who stepped down last fall.

Hutton was the director of racing and racing secretary at Remington Park from 2000 to 2010 and most recently was the racing secretary at Zia Park, which concluded its meeting December 4.

“I think he’ll be a good fit,” said Derron Heldt, Prairie Meadows’ director of racing. “We’d like to have a circuit with Remington, and I think his work experience there will help. I think there’s an opportunity with him coming from the Southwest to grow that recruiting. I think he has a lot of positives.”

Hutton, 54, got involved in racing through his father, who owned horses in Ohio. He began as a jockey at age 16, then trained his family’s stable. Through the years, he has held positions from starting gate crew member, to simulcasting coordinator, to track announcer.

Prairie Meadows will host a 67-day Thoroughbred meeting in 2012, from April 20 to August 11.
