Electronic wagering bill advances in Wyoming House
 
CASPER, WY - Jan. 29, 2011 - A bill that would allow Wyoming to license and collect fees from companies that offer electronic wagering on horse races passed the House of Representatives last week.

The legislation would give the state Pari-Mutuel Commission, the body that oversees horse racing, the power to charge a fee to out-of-state businesses that provide electronic and phone wagering to customers in Wyoming. The proceeds would be split among track operators, simulcast businesses, horse breeders and the commission.

The bill's impact on Wyoming's already sagging horse racing industry remains a matter of debate. Although the commission's director says the legislation would bring accountability to electronic wagering, the state's lone track operator insists it will only cause problems.
