Championships highlight Prairie Meadows’ richest Quarter Horse
stakes schedule Altoona, IA – Jan. 21, 2012 - Prairie Meadows' fall quarter horse meet will have its richest stakes schedule ever, capped by the $1 million Bank of America Challenge Championships on Oct. 27. The 27-day meet will average more than a stakes race per day from Aug. 18 to Oct. 27, offering 33 stakes worth more than $2.5 million combined. Eighteen stakes will be on closing weekend, with Iowa Champions Night for Iowa-breds being on Friday, Oct. 26, and the Challenge Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Challenge is quarter horse racing's year-end championship, with six races for different ages and sexes. It is headed by the $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship, in which four of its Twelve of the meet's stakes are graded, the designation for an elite race, including the first Grade I races ever held at Prairie Meadows the Challenge Championship at 440 yards; the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at 400 yards; and the $125,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge Championship at 870 yards, all on closing night. Prairie Meadows will have its regional Challenge races on Sept. 15, with the winners of the six races advancing to the national finals. Three of Prairie Meadows' traditional biggest races will be run on Oct. 13 the Valley Junction Futurity for 2-year-olds with an estimated purse of $225,000; the Altoona Derby for 3-year-olds with an estimated purse of $100,000, and the $45,000 Two RIvers stakes for older horses.
