CHARLTON AND GUCE OFF TO HOT NOVEMBER STARTS AT LOS AL

CYPRESS, CA - Nov. 14, 2011 - Jockeys Cheryl Charlton and Ramon Guce made the biggest headlines the past weekend at Los Alamitos Race Course. Charlton continued her winning ways during the month of November, as she picked up wins like the one aboard Warren’s Hearthrob in the trials to the Gold Rush Derby and aboard Ahh Lover in the gelding’s eight-length victory in the first race on Sunday.

One would imagine that Cheryl will cherish the last couple of weeks. They’ve been stupendous. She won with five straight mounts last week and so far this month she’s won eight races from 16mounts and has finished in the top three 12 times during that span.

Another great rider is Ramon Guce, the perennial leading Thoroughbred jockey at Los Alamitos. Guce enjoyed a prodigious day at the races on Sunday, November 13, as “The Goose” won a total of six races. He began the day by winning aboard Stanley Watkins’ Cruz’n Kitty in the fifth race at Hollywood Park. Sent off at 12-1 odds, Cruz’n Kitty was saddled by leading trainer Charles Treece. After his victory across town, Guce came to Los Alamitos and had a five-star performance. He won three races aboard Thoroughbreds and two on Quarter Horses.

His Thoroughbred wins came with Forest Prince (by 4 ¼lengths at short odds of 1-5) in the second, Whisper Me This (by 1 ¼ lengths at odds of 3-2) and Smokin Motion (by ½ length at even money odds). Guce’s winning ride aboard Smokin Motion was his 99th Thoroughbred victory of the season. He is also the owner of the track record of 111 Thoroughbred wins for a single season, which he set in 2009. Guce’s Quarter Horse wins on the night came with Ocean Fever ($10.60) and Mayla Bonita ($6).

As for Thoroughbred trainers at Los Alamitos, Vod Farris’ barn is hitting on all cylinders right now. Since November 1,Farris has four wins from the nine horses he’s saddled for a win ratio of44.4%. In the Quarter Horse ranks, Valentin Zamudio is enjoying a great start to the month, as he’s won five races from 16 starters. November’s hottest Quarter Horse trainer is Denny Ekins, as he’s visited the winner’s circle three times from his seven starters. In the Quarter Horse jockey ranks, Rodrigo Aceves is one win away from his 100th of the season.
