Mas Frijoles Back On Saturday In
Zia Derby Trials at Ruidoso
RUIDOSO DOWNS, New Mexico (July 11, 2011) – Bill McCarty
and Paul Wood’s homebred Mas Frijoles returns to racing
action in a position to become among the top qualifiers
to the $121,219 Zia Derby on Saturday afternoon at
Ruidoso Downs.
The horses with the 10-fastest times from the three Zia
Derby trials at 400 yards advance to the finals on July
31. The Zia Derby is a fixture on the Zia Festival
program which is filled with New Mexico-bred stakes
races with total purses expected to exceed $1 million.
The Zia Derby trials run as the first three races on the
11-race card. First post time is 1 p.m. with free
parking and free general admission.
Mas Frijoles has only started four times, however has
proven to be one of the top New Mexico-bred sophomores.
He won his first two starts, each last fall, and then
made a successful jump to stakes competition early this
year. He started 2011 in the Shue Fly Stakes and
finished second to stable mate Quatro Menudos. He then
substantiated that effort when he raced to a third-place
finish in the $120,000 NMHBA Stakes as the 3-2 favorite.
That was his most recent appearance on February 20.
Mas Frijoles starts from the eighth post position in the
second trial with Salvador Martinez aboard.
The first trial brings out Reckless Lane, who returns
after a layoff of more than one year. He was first or
second in each of his first three starts before
finishing fifth in the Mountain Top Futurity.
G.R. Carter Jr. gets the mount on Reckless Lane with the
ninth post position.
