Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses entered in Sunday's New
Mexico Cup races at Zia Park
Eleven stakes will be contested, seven for Thoroughbreds
and four for Quarter Horses. Post time for the first
race is 12:15 p.m. (MDT).
The feature Thoroughbred race of the day, the 1-mile,
$180,000-added Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship
(R), has attracted a full field of 12. Double Smart, a
homebred 5-year-old gelding by
Premeditation racing for
Roger K. Beasley and Leach Racing, will be making his
first start since May 7, when he scored a three-length
victory in the 1-mile, $110,000 Jack Cole Handicap (R)
at SunRay Park.
Fastest qualifier Call A Fast Corona drew post 5 for the
richest Quarter Horse race of the day, the 400-yard,
$322,283 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2). A homebred
Southern Corona gelding campaigned by Richard R. Shearer
of Portales, Call A Fast Corona has won three
consecutive races, including the first of seven New
Mexico Cup Futurity trials on October 15.

eight in this year's New Mexico Cup 870 Championship.
The 7-year-old gelding by the Runaway Winner stallion
Real Runaway has won two of his three outs this season,
