2011 Report Card – by Laura Flynn, Editor

Ruidoso, NM - Jan. 1, 2012 - For the last five years SureBet has posted and published our annual “Report Card” along with our Annual Publishers Statement. In past years the response was much higher, full of helpful insight from our readers. The fact that the numbers of responses were lower this year leads me to believe we are doing a pretty good job.  The following comments were chosen for their uniqueness and importance.

Reader: Don't tiptoe around major issues that directly impact the sport. If a trainer who runs 20-30 horses a week on a circuit and that trainer gets 5 positive test in a 2 week period that is news!

Either you want to jump out and take the lead and report these things or you want to copy and paste Generic AP articles that won’t cause anyone to say hmmmmmm.

SureBet: You know what, you’re right. This issue is something that our entire staff has struggled with. The main reason is the lack of timely information available from the State Racing Commissions.

For example, as of this writing the last minutes posted on the New Mexico Racing Commission website are from the Sept. 22, 2011 regular meeting. Now I will say that some states such as the California Horse Racing Board seem to be somewhat more responsible in releasing information to the public. Their most recent posting was November 17, 2011.

SureBet has made it a policy not to print anything without ligament proof to backup our editorial. “As the Walker Turns” has not and will not, be what drives this publication.

So therein lays the problem.

However, the racing industry in general has been called on the carpet to become more forth coming and as a result The Jockey Club and Association of Racing Commissioners International have joined forces on a searchable online database of regulatory rulings for Thoroughbred trainers.

Thoroughbred Regulatory Rulings, which is accessible at thoroughbredrulings.com, stemmed from recommendations in this year’s report by McKinsey & Company on sustaining growth in Thoroughbred racing.

Two websites that appear to carry Quarter Horse rulings as well Thoroughbred rulings are: Racing Medication & Testing Consortium and the Association of Racing Commissioners International.

Links are now available to these sites on our “Home” page and the most recent industry rulings will also be provided to our readers monthly in our E- publication.

Reader:  Forget TB racing news

SureBet: Wow! I have just been itching to tackle this one!

I can’t tell you how many times we have been advised to “Just pick one!  Go one way or the other! No one else covers both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing”.

So which half should we turn our backs on? Maybe we should throw out the $2.4M All American Futurity or the Los Al $2M. Or how about we throw out half of Remington Park’s racing schedule this year or maybe dump Santa Anita and Hollywood Park all together.

Forget Zenyatta and Pepper’s Pride or maybe Llano Teller and Good Reason Sa?  I want to say I could choose between trainers like Steve Asmussen and Paul Jones, but I can’t.

SureBet Racing News is based in New Mexico, which is a mixed meet state. It is this standard that is the foundation of our publication. We have separated the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred race reports on our “Home” page and in our “State News” pages to accommodate our readers’ news preferences.

Reader:  Sometimes SureBet seems slow posting the news; I can go to other sites and get it faster, how come?

SureBet: There is an old advertising saying, “It is better to be first than right” We say, Bah, Boo, Bad!! The Internet brings everything to everyone so fast these days that being first is almost impossible.

We would rather be right than first! As editor of SureBet I receive hundreds of press release every week. As I sort through them over and over I see in the tagline: RESEND CORRECTION; don’t get me wrong this is a good thing! It just takes time to sort through everything.

I stopped into a hamburger joint the other day on one of my road trips and saw a sign that in my mind describes SureBet.

“This is not fast food – It’s Good Food”

So, we may not be the fastest, but we’re out there every day working hard for you.

Reader:  Sometimes I get lost, what is the logic behind your site, how does it work?

SureBet: SureBet handles a lot of news and information and it is understandable one might get confused or lost trying to find certain information that is important to them. Hopefully this will help:

1.       SureBet is designed around three (3) main pages: Home, Quarter Horse Racing News and Thoroughbred Racing News. From these three pages it is possible to reach all available news on our site.

2.       National industry news is always located on our “Home Page” after a few days it is filed under the appropriate state where it remains. Each state has a news archives dating back several years.

3.       Individual race reports are filed under Quarter Horse Racing News or Thoroughbred Racing News, these links are located at the top of our “Home Page” or in our quick link boxes located in the middle of the “Home Page” they are also filed under the appropriate state under Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse categories. Each state has a racing news archive.

4.       Also located at the top of our “Home Page” are quick links to Stallions Online (QH, TB Stallions and Breeding Farm information and news), SureBet Monthly E-Magazine and FaceBook.

5.       All  “Quick Links” for results, auction news, breeding news, contact info, etc., are located on the left hand column of our three main pages.

6.       Stakes advances and Daily Carryovers are located on the lower portion of the “Home Page”.

REALLY UGLY ON OUR PART!

Reader:  Someone did an article about a DERBY somewhere and said it was for 3 yr olds and up.  DERBY'S are strictly for 3 yr olds.

SureBet: I wish you could have remembered where you read this. It is my responsibility to catch mistakes and typos. I regret this mistake and will make every effort to improve in the future.
